GLEN INNES SEVERN COUNCIL gisc.nsw.gov.au OUR COUNCIL NEWS, NOTICES & EVENTS AROUND THE REGION Your Weekly Wrap Up New England Rail Trail Update Exciting progress is underway for the New England Rail Trail project as Council is now set to proceed with the preliminary work required to kickstart the trail construction with Council allocating funds in an extraordinary meeting on 16 May 2024, This development will be a signature tourism attraction as well as a great recreational facility for locals. The first section likely to be constructed spans from Glen Innes to Glencoe Recent independent community consultation has also shown approximately one third of the respondents support the project, one third favour the return of a train service and one third not having strong feelings either way. In light of statements from the State Government indicating that train services are not returning anytime soon, it is clear that the choice is not between rail services or a rail trail, but rather between a rail trail or the continuation of an abandoned corridor, and Council is encouraging the community to throw full support behind this exciting project. A major consideration is the economic benefit to Glen Innes of the construction phase, with $8.7M of external funding to flow into local businesses for things such as earthworks, concrete etc. This is all new money into town, and with a slowing economy Council is extremely focussed on supporting our local businesses. The funding has come from a joint Commonwealth/NSW allocation of up to $283 million for 195 Bushfire Local Economic Recovery projects under the Local Economic Recovery Program and the support to the region by both levels of government is appreciated. This stage is part of a larger project from Armidale to Glen Innes, and a local supporter group has formed to support the development of the New England Rail Trail across both council areas. Stay tuned for further updates as we embark on this exciting journey to bring the New England Rail Trail to life. Image: Rail Trails Australla NAIDOC Week 2024 Along with other local organisations.
