At 1072 metres above sea level, Glen Innes Highlands is the highest large town (over 2,500 population) in Australia, with nearby Ben Lomond rising to 1500 metres. The altitude makes for mild summers and bracing winters. The altitude gives our region four distinct seasons. Summer nights are generally mild, autumn sunsets are aflame with reds and golds, winters deliciously crisp and springs a flurry of growth. This fascinating Celtic heritage is cherished by the locals, and is palpable throughout the town today, visible in both the numerous festivals held throughout the year and the extraordinary exhibits on display at the district museum. It was a group of Glen residents who established the Australian Standing Stones, venue for the annual Australian Celtic Festival. The Stones are especially haunting on a winter’s morning when there’s often frost on the ground and the stones are shrouded in mist. There are more than thirty Heritage-listed buildings in the CBD of Glen Innes and more a little further afield.
